XINXIU | Magnesium Alloy Steering Wheel Skeleton Die Casting Case

With the development of new energy vehicles and automotive lightweighting, magnesium alloys are being used more and more widely in automotive structural components due to their low density, high specific strength, and excellent vibration-damping properties. As a critical structural component of the vehicle’s interior and driving system, the steering wheel frame must meet requirements for strength, stiffness, and dimensional accuracy while also meeting higher standards for part weight and manufacturing consistency.

XINXIU develops and manufactures automotive magnesium alloy steering wheel frames for its customers. Using AM50A magnesium alloy—commonly employed in automotive safety components—the company employs processes such as DFM analysis, mold development, vacuum die-casting, stamping, and five-axis CNC finishing to achieve lightweight design and precision manufacturing of steering wheel frames.

Project Background

This steering wheel frame exhibits the typical characteristics of an automotive structural component. It features an overall ring-shaped structure with multiple mounting and connection points integrated into its center, and includes varying wall thicknesses, reinforcing ribs, hole patterns, and complex geometric features.

Since the product is a safety-critical structural component for automobiles, it is subject to stringent requirements regarding internal quality, dimensional accuracy, and structural strength. Therefore, during the project development phase, it is necessary not only to assess whether the product’s structure is suitable for die-casting but also to focus on controlling issues such as porosity, shrinkage, deformation, burrs, and deviations in critical dimensions.

AM50A Magnesium Alloy Die Casting

This project uses AM50A magnesium alloy as the product material.
Compared to traditional aluminum alloy steering wheel frames, magnesium alloy has a lower material density, which allows for further reduction in part weight while meeting product structural requirements.
Through material and structural optimization, the steering wheel frame in this project is approximately 32% lighter than an aluminum alloy frame, providing an effective solution for automotive weight reduction.
During the forming process, XINXIU employs a high-pressure vacuum die-casting process for magnesium alloy, optimizing the pouring, venting, and overflow systems to accommodate the steering wheel’s complex structure, thereby enhancing the product’s forming stability and internal quality.

From Mold Development to Precision Machining

To ensure dimensional accuracy and consistency across production batches for the steering wheel frame, XINXIU employs a comprehensive manufacturing process:
DFM Analysis → Mold Development → Magnesium Alloy Vacuum Die Casting → Punching and Trimming of Gate Scrap → Deburring → 5-Axis CNC Finishing → Cleaning and Degreasing → X-Ray Non-Destructive Testing → Full-Dimension Inspection → Protective Packaging of Finished Products

X-ray Inspection Ensures Internal Quality

Automotive structural components must not only meet aesthetic and dimensional requirements; internal casting quality is equally important.
Therefore, this project incorporates X-ray non-destructive testing after CNC machining to inspect the interior of the products and promptly identify potential internal defects. At the same time, full-dimension inspections are conducted to verify critical dimensions and the overall dimensions of the products.
